Orange County is served by one commercial airport, John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana, the closest private-jet airport to Newport Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa, and the coast. Private flights don’t use the main terminal; they use dedicated FBOs (fixed-base operators, the private terminals where you park, walk a few steps, and step onto the aircraft). Orange County awarded its long-term FBO leases to two operators, and they’re both excellent:
- ACI Jet, a well-run, Orange County rooted operation on Campus Drive, with an on-site U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility that makes international arrivals and departures seamless.
- Clay Lacy Aviation, a legendary name in business aviation, now home to a large, purpose-built SNA facility.

One local detail we always plan around: John Wayne enforces one of the strictest nighttime noise curfews in the country, so late-night departures and early-morning arrivals are limited. Spend any time around John Wayne and you get a feel for what Orange County flies. The coast

Keep heading south and Laguna Beach delivers the coves, tide pools, and the art-town charm. The water here is genuinely clean, and locals are protective of it.
Shopping and dining
For shopping, Orange County punches well above its weight. Fashion Island in Newport Beach is the open-air, ocean-breeze option, anchored by Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom with Louis Vuitton and the rest of the designer roster. A few minutes away in Costa Mesa, South Coast Plaza is the West Coast’s largest shopping center, 250-plus boutiques and just about every luxury house you can name (Gucci, Cartier, Bvlgari, Lanvin). A little history
South down the coast, Mission San Juan Capistrano, founded in 1776 and marking its 250th anniversary, is often called the jewel of California’s 21 Spanish missions, complete with the town’s springtime swallows tradition and Swallows Day Parade. Orange County was citrus country first, by the 1930s it grew a sixth of the nation’s Valencia oranges, then oil, then post-war aerospace, and finally the master-planned coastal county you see today. Citrus groves to Gulfstreams, more or less.
